Aleksei Panov, a 41-year-old intelligence officer from Russia’s GRU military spy agency, was discovered dead in Moscow’s embassy in Cyprus. Baumgertner, who vanished from his residence on January 7, has not been located yet. His disappearance, coupled with Panov’s death, has fueled rumors due to their proximity in timing and the reported friendship between Baumgertner and the Russian ambassador.
